Car, plow truck crash reported on I-295 SB Submitted by Around Town Web... on Tuesday, February 9th, 11:03 am PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Dispatch tell us police and crews are on scene of a car and plow truck collision on I-295 Southbound. Maine DOT's Ted Talbot says it was the plow truck that struck the car. Officials tell us the crash is near exit 4 in Portland. No word of injuries at this time. Drivers are advised to use caution in the area. NEWS CENTER will update this story. All Community Sponsors Police: Fight led to Portland double stabbing Submitted by Around Town Web... on Tuesday, February 9th, 10:31 am PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Portland police are investigating a stabbing that happened Tuesday morning on Marginal way in Portland. Police say around 3:30 am officers responded to a 911 call for a fight in the area of 132 Marginal Way. According to police, as soon as officers arrived on scene, at least two or more individuals fled the scene in a vehicle. Shortly afterwards the same vehicle was located in a snowbank at Pine and State Street in the city's West End. Police determined the two men in the vehicle sustained stab wounds during the fight. The two males were transported to Maine Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. "I thought everybody would have their Super Bowl food, and they're already at home watching the pregame stuff, so I was not expecting this," Joe Menard, who was just going to Hannaford for routine groceries, said. "I thought I was going to be safe." Other businesses benefited from the Super Bowl as well. A lot of people want to watch the big game on a new big screen. David Munster's TV Sales and Service always sees an increase in sales this time of year. In a typical week, the store sells anywhere between 10 and 15 TV's. This week, it sold about 40. Some people even bought them right off the wall. Vehicles left on City streets after 10:00 PM can be towed at the owner’s expense. “With an updated forecast from the National Weather Service of 6-8 inches for Portland, we are calling a citywide parking ban tonight to get the streets clear,” said City Manager Jon Jennings. All Community Sponsors Soto sentenced to 18 years for sexually assaulting young girl Submitted by Around Town Web... on Tuesday, February 2nd, 9:09 pm PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- A man was sentenced to at least 18 years in in state prison Tuesday after he pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting a seven-year-old girl after breaking into her bedroom in an apartment in Portland. Julian Soto appeared before a judge in the Cumberland County Courthouse Tuesday afternoon. As part of a plea agreement, the judge sentenced Soto to 18 years in prison, with another possible seven years if Soto reoffends during his 10-year probation period. The attorney for the prosecution said that Soto used a footstool that he found in the trash to stand on in order to break into the girl's bedroom in an apartment on Greenleaf Street in Portland. Soto lived in the apartment above the victim and her family. The family had just moved in three days before the assault happened around October 9, 2014. The Senate seat, which covers the City of Biddeford and the towns of Alfred, Arundel, Dayton, Kennebunkport and Lyman, was previously held by Sen. David Dutremble of Biddeford, who resigned his position on Jan. 28. Governor Paul LePage and Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap signed the proclamation announcing the special election on Monday, Feb. 1. Maine’s three political parties, the Democrats, Green Independents and Republicans, will now caucus to choose candidates for the seat. Candidate nominations are due to the Office of the Secretary of State by 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 16.
